US coronavirus cases hit new global record, 55,000 cases recorded in a single day - TNBCLive

The United States coronavirus cases hit a new global record, nearly 55000 cases in the last 24 hours. The surge in coronavirus cases on Thursday across the country has put President Donald Trump’s  handling the pandemic under the microscope. The sudden jump in COVID-19 cases has led to halt the plan of the governors to reopen their states.

According to the John Hopkins tally, the daily virus figure stood at  55,274 late Thursday. The health authorities already warned that there has been a sharp increase in daily average new cases along with a spike in hospitalizations in the country.

The United States is the worst hit country in the world which has put President Donald Trump’s ability  to handle the situation under question. He was also condemned for not wearing a mask in public despite his administration’s recommendations. The worldwide pandemic has shattered the global economy and put many people out of jobs.

Out of the 50 states in the US, 37 states are recording rising coronavirus cases. Florida has  confirmed 10,000 new cases while California, another epicentre, saw positive tests climb 37% with hospitalizations up 56% over the past two weeks.

Meanwhile,  several other countries have started to reopen their plunging economy.  The coronavirus contagion has now infected over 10.3 million people across the globe and has caused over half a million deaths but WHO Secretary-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said that it is “not even close to getting over”.

Just a few weeks ago, daily 22,000 cases were being registered in the United States.  It has now reported more than 40,000 cases for seven straight days breaking all records.

Dr Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases warned earlier this week the daily COVID-19 cases may reach 100,000 if proper measures are not taken to slow down the rate.
