The US Security Council has directed the countries to take essential steps against terror financing claiming that they have laws to make it a serious crime. The French-drafted resolution was adopted without any opposition by the council that calls on nations to “ensure that their domestic laws and regulations establish serious criminal offenses”. The move aims to punish those who collect funds or provide financial support to terrorist or terror organizations.
The decision will be imposed only after the sanction of the law. The resolution has urged all the countries to strengthen its effort to track terrorism and if they get any information due to their investigation to inform them.
It has been considered as the first standalone measure which is mainly dedicated to finishing the financing of terrorism.
India has warmly welcomed the move and highlighted on its effective execution. India has been forcing to take effective action against countries supporting terrorism in its diplomatic against Pakistan.
Syed Akbaruddin, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, hitting out at Pakistan said, “Terrorists are going to be ever more creative in finding ways to violate the rulebook. Also, the unfortunate reality is that States who are apologists for terrorists will continue to provide alibis to justify their actions and inaction too, as was done by a serial offender earlier today.”
“The proof of the pudding is in its eating, the utility of any council resolution will, therefore, be in its implementation…The Council can and needs to do a better job of overseeing the implementation of its resolutions relating to terrorist financing,” he added.
Mr. Akbaruddin claimed that in order to carry out the move more effectively the world body needs to do it more effectively.
Mr. Akbaruddin later tweeted: “New milestone adopted by @UN to Counter Terrorist Financing. Unfortunately, States who are apologists for terrorists will continue to provide alibis to justify their actions & inaction too.”
