On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Independent India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 55th death anniversary and remembers him for his outstanding service for our country.

PM Modi was re-elected for another term with a huge mandate on May 23. His Twitter post reads, “Tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji on his death anniversary. We remember his contributions to our nation.”

Among other prominent leaders, who paid tribute to Pandit Nehru on his 55th death anniversary were Union Minister Rajnath Singh. Mr. Singh tweets, “Remembering India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s contribution to our society and the nation on his punyatithi. I offer my tribute to him.”

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu tweets that Pt. Nehru will be remembered always for his exceptional contribution to “building a modern India”.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also paid homage on Pt. Nehru’s death anniversary.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is the longest serving Prime Minister in India, fought for country’s freedom against British Rule. Pt. Nehru was imprisoned several times during the freedom struggle. In 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of Independent India.

Jawaharlal Nehru served as the Prime Minister of India from 1947 till May 27, 1964, the day of which he died.
