Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unveil the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in his Lok Sabha Constituency of Varanasi in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The event is a part of an annual gathering of overseas Indians and for the first time organized in Varanasi. It is the 15th edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.
Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth will be the Chief Guest of the event while the Norway lawmaker Himanshu Gulati will be the special guest.
BJP has counted the overseas Indians as a big support base for the center-ruling party and the Prime Minister to hold the events with the diaspora on his foreign tours. The 15th edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas has a special significance with the forthcoming 2019 National Elections scheduled on May.
Participants at this year’s event will be given a special tour of the Kumbh Mela, located around 100 km from Varanasi, and also be allowed to witness the Republic Day celebrations in Delhi over the weekend.
The theme of 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is “role of the Indian diaspora in building new India”, said a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
The decision to celebrate the event was taken by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the first Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was celebrated in 2003.
