US President Donald Trump and Melina Trump tried their hand at spinning the charkha at Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. On Monday, India was eagerly waiting for Trump and his family on their first official visit to India.
As scheduled, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump as they arrived in Ahmedabad. President Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner came out of the aircraft first.
PM Modi then escorted them to the US President’s armoured black car known as the “Beast.” Dancers in colourful costumes performed for the guests.
When the president came down from the presidential jet Air Force One, PM Modi greeted Trump with a warm hug.
All of them then headed Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen guiding the Trumps at the ashram and telling them about the charkha. President Trump was captured trying his hands at the historical charkha.
President Trump and his wife Melina Trump then garlanded an image of Mahatma Gandhi in the Ashram. Trump also signed the visitor’s book at the Ashram with a message “To My Great Friend Prime Minister Modi – Thank You For This Wonderful Visit!.” Take a look:
They were served high tea featuring Gujarati delicacy Khaman, broccoli and corn samosa, apple pie and Kaju Katli. “The US President was happy to visit the ashram. While leaving he said that it was a very peaceful experience and appreciated the simple living style of Gandhi ji,” Sabarmati Ashram Trustee Kartikeya Sarabhai was quoted.
Both the leaders then reached the newly-built cricket stadium in Motera and addressed a gathering of over one lakh people at the Namaste Trump event. The Trump couple reached Agra for a sunset visit to the iconic Taj Mahal mausoleum.
