More than 28,375 sarpanch candidates will fight on December 30 Panchayat Elections for 13,276 Panchayat in election-bound Punjab, reports a spokesman of the state Election Commission on Sunday.
Yesterday, after the end of the withdrawal process of nomination papers, the spokesman said that 1,863 Sarpanchs (Village Headmen) have been unopposed elected.
Over 22,203 Panches have also been elected unopposed as 104,027 candidates will take part for the remaining Panches (Village Council Members) posts.
Punjab authorities had already received 210,494 nominations for the forthcoming elections in the state. Out of which, 48,111 nominations papers were filed for Sarpanchs post and 162,383 nomination papers were filed for Panches post.
Voting for 13,276 Panchayats was scheduled on December 30.
The EC spokesperson continued that 83,831 Panches would be elected for the post of 13,276 Panchayats.
Out of these, 22690 seats are booked for General Category Women, 17811 seats for Scheduled Caste (SC), 12634 seats for Scheduled Caste Women, 26315 for General Category, and remaining 4381 for Backward Classes.
In total, more than 1.27 crore registered voters in Punjab for these Panchayat Elections. The Election Commission has established 17268 polling booths and 86340 personnel will be posted on Election duty.
Congress has been in power in the election-bound Punjab since March 2017.
The opposition Shiromani Akali Dal has alleged UPA government of getting nomination papers of its candidates rejected at several places.
