On Thursday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been offered with a memento honoring the sacrifice and contribution of the police fraternity of India. He went to Gujarat to mark the National Unity Day. The memento is a replica of the National Police Memorial that commemorates the death of over 34000 states and central police personnel, was offered by Naseer Ahmad’s wife, one of the 42 CRPF soldiers who were killed in February’s deadly terror attack in Pulwama District of Jammu and Kashmir.
Since BJP came to power in 2014, PM Modi-led NDA Government has been celebrating the birthday of Sardar Vallabhai Patel as National Unity Day.
In video footage shared online by the PIB (Press Information Bureau), PM Modi is spotted standing on a platform with the “Statue of Unity” – a 182-meter-high statue of Sardar Vallabhai Patel – in the background.
The Twitter post reads, “On 14 February 2019, 42 brave @crpfindia jawans were martyred in a terrorist attack in #Pulwama. Wife of martyred CRPF Hawaldar Naseer Ahmad, presents PM @narendramodi with a memento of National Police Memorial on behalf of all Police fraternity of #India.”
On the 144th birthday of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, the centre has divided Jammu and Kashmir into two separate Union Territories – Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh. The move was initiated three months after the government has announced to eliminate the decades-old “special status” under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution.
As the country’s first Union Home Minister, Sardar Vallabhai Patel is praised for the merger of around 560 princely states into the Union of India.
PM Modi further participated in an “Ekta Diwas” or “National Unity Day Parade”. He is likely to visit a technology demonstration site later in the day and interact with civil service probationers at Kevadiya in Narmada District, reads a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
Indian President Ram Nath Kovind and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have also paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhai Patel in Delhi. In the National Capital, Mr. Shah has flagged off the “Run for Unity” marathon with boxing champion Mary Kom handing over the flag. Thousands of people are likely to take part in similar marathons in various parts of the nation.
