Test5-Gujarat prepares for a dry summer amidst water scarcity

In what can be termed as a ‘dry summer’, the government in Gujarat has recommended that the civic bodies should start searching for alternatives already. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has received a warning from the Ukai dam to come up with water conservation plans and the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) is considering adding tubewells across the city to deal with the water shortage.

The Vadodara Municipal Corporation relies mostly on rivers like Narmada and Mahisagar for its water supply which are already struggling with their water levels. Besides the rivers, the civic body also has its own reservoir in Ajwa which gets the surplus water from the Narmada Canal and should be able to aid the VMC until May.

However, the VMC officials are sure that the city will not face any scarcity of water. Alpesh Majumdar, Additional City Engineer, VMC, said, “We are preparing a feasibility report to add tubewells in our premises where water tanks are located. We have sought a study report of agencies that have compiled the data of the underground water tables to help us ascertain which parts of the city can have tubewells added to make up for the deficit. This work will be completed on a war footing basis, ahead of the summer.”

On the other hand, the water in the Ukai dam did not rise to its maximum level and is already fifty per cent less in comparison to last year, given the less rainfall during the previous monsoon. This has prompted the authorities to write to the industries, farmers’ co-operative societies, SMC and five other municipalities to devise plans to minimize water wastage which might otherwise lead to water shortages.

Farmers have been requested to sow crops which consumer less water instead of paddy crops and the SMC will use social media and put up hoardings in different parts of the city with appeals to use water wisely to avoid a dry summer.
