Hours after he was authorized by the State Assembly to take up with the center the issue of delay in SGPC elections, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said people have the right to early polls of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. Since 2016 the election of supreme body controlling gurdwaras are pending.
The Chief Minister said while interacting to the media persons that the delay in the SGPC elections is totally wrong and unfair for the people of Punjab. He added that the Union Government can’t restrict the Punjabis from electing for the SGPC election as it is the democratic right of every Punjabi while responding to the issue that was raised by AAP lawmaker HS Phoolka.
In the midst of the protests by SAD and BJP members, Captain Amarinder Singh was authorized by the House in order to raise the issue with the central government. Mr. Singh also assured to the House that he will meet the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh as soon as possible to press him to start the elections very soon.
Seeking the permission of the Speaker, on the behalf of his government he said that, it was the bounden duty of the central government to hold timely elections to the SGPC since the Gurdwara Act was national legislation.
AAP members along with the members of the ruling party welcome it with thumping on desks as the resolution was put to vote.
The Chief Minister told the reporters that except Akilas and BJP, all others in the House agreed on the issue as the elections were overdue by three years.
