India’s Historic Medal Performance  In Commonwealth Games 2018

The performance of India in Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2018 has been historic in many senses, starting from registering its 500th medal at the world-class event to bagging 66 medals this year, which includes mostly the gold ones.

India ranked third in medals tally after Australia(198 medals) and England (136 medals).

The tremendous performance from India during the 21st Commonwealth Game clearly shows comeback of the lifeless sporting culture in the country. The number game of medals that were won during the event, ignites a little hope for India’s bright future in days and years ahead.

As per medals tally, India has won 504 medals at CWG between the year 1930-2018, out of which 350 has been won during the last five editions.

Also, there has been a rise in the number of Gold medalists in the games, thus, it clearly shows the outstanding performance by the country’s sportsperson.

However, India’s overall performance improved from the Glasgow by 2 medals, but the number of gold medals has gone up by 11 in the recent edition. This growth is almost 60% up than the previous edition.

Indian players have always given a tough competition to the rival teams and historically excelled at sports like – weightlifting, wrestling, and shooting. But the last two CWG editions have witnessed the outstanding efforts from these sportspeople by securing Gold medals.

This shows how much work is done by Indian athletes to perform better in all form of international sports events.

One of the most impressive facts is that the majority of medals won by the Indian players have come from only a few sports categories. A quarter of combined medals were won from shooting alone. Also, 8 out of 10 medals won at Gold Coast came from Indian athletes, who have excellent historical achievements in the relevant sports.

There were 27 entries from India to participate in shooting and the success rate at CWG is quite high with 16 medals coming from it. The success rate is nearly 60% in this sport.

Out of 66 medals won at the CWG 2018, 24% came from shooting, 18% from wrestling, 14% from boxing, 14% from weightlifting and 12% from table tennis.

In terms of medal categories, India won 7 gold, 4 silver, 4 bronze in shooting; 5 gold, 3 silver, 4 bronze in wrestling; 5 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze in weightlifting; 3 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze in boxing and 3 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze in table tennis.
