On this Wednesday Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte approved the shutting down of the nation’s most famous tourist island Boracay for a period of six months starting from April 26 as stated by his spokesman which cleared the way for a huge cleaning exercise which has been described by him as a “sewer pool.”

Situated on the northern tip of central Panay Island Boracay is the most sought-after destination for both domestic and international travelers for its sugary white sand beach, exclusive night scenery and rich variety of marine sports resulting in a footfall of nearly 2 million tourists last year.

The main source of revenue of this island is from the famous luxury hotel chains like Shangri-La’s five-star Boracay Resort & Spa along with numerous beachside restaurants and all these providing employment opportunities for thousands of local residents. Such a decision was declared by the Presidential spokesman Harry Roque via his twitter account without sharing any further details.
