Mr. Somnath Chattejee is no more alive. The former Lok Sabha Speaker and CPM member died today in Kolkata just a few minutes after 8 am. After suffering from a stroke in end of June, he has been in and out of the hospital in Kolkata. On July 29, he had celebrated his 89th birth anniversary.
He was in the post of Speaker in Lok Sabha from 2004-2009. Mr. Chattejee for more than 40 years since 1968 was a great supporter and member of Communist Party of India (Marxist). He represented his party in the Parliament over 10 times and has been acknowledged as one of the great CMP supporters.
Mr. Chattejee has great oratorical skills, which he has acquired through training in England. He has completed his Masters in Law from the Cambridge University. He has only lost one election in his lifetime against Mamata Banerjee in 1984 from the Jadavpur Constituency.
In 2008, Mr. Chattejee contributed for the part that even Mr. Jyoti Basu could not by defying the party diktat. When CPM did not support the UPA-1 government, he stepped down from the post of Speaker to vote against the government.
He was not only CPM member but was above the party politics. He never compromises his own ethical thoughts for anything so CMP acknowledged him as a disqualified member. Mr. Chattejee was initially at silent state but finally said: “that was the saddest day of my life.”
His outburst caused distinctions among the party members. Many party members wanted him back in the party as he lay in the crucial condition in hospital, there were voices who wanted his given the party membership for once. In social media, the demand for Mr. Chattejee to come back as a member of CPM is reflected throughout.
Somnath Chatterjee used to live with his wife, daughter, and son. He was an independent man with personal ethics and political views. A great leader and most important an honest man with great thoughts to gain attain of party members. However, he is no more in the living world, political world, may he soul rest in peace.
