Mahalaya is basically observed seven days before the Durga Puja, marks the advent of Durga, the goddess of Supreme power. This day is generally referred to as Pitru Paksha ends and it marks the beginning of Devi Paksha. It is also said that worshippers do tarpan to remember their forefather.

The main significance of Mahalaya-

It is said that Mahalaya is celebrating as the day of invocation, especially by Bengalis. In 2018 Durga puja starts on October 14 and Mahalaya marks goddess Durga’s advent in her battle against evil. It is also known for the end of evil Mahishasur that what the devotees pray for the deity’s invocation on earth and for her blessing.
