A Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Professor Suman Dhar is a recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, has donated over 50 percent of his prize money to Kalyani University as his alma mater to encourage students to take up Ph.D.
Vice-chancellor of Kalyani University, Shankar Kumar Ghosh said that Mr. Dhar has handed 50 percent of his award money Rs. 2.5 lakh to him, an award in memory of his late mother.
On Saturday, Mr. Ghosh after being handed over the donation amount said that “every year, the student who will come first in MSc in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics will be given an amount from the interest of the donated fund to encourage research.”
At present, Mr. Dhar is a Professor at JNU’s Centre for Molecular Medicine. He has completed his Master’s degree from the University of Kalyani.
The award-winning JNU Professor said, “As an alumni of Kalyani University, I had decided to share fifty per cent of my money achieved through Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award with Kalyani University authorities for help students who intend to go for research. I handed over the money to VC on Saturday.”
Mr. Dhar continued that “students who will get help from my fund will also get my mentorship.”
Suman Dhar had received Rs. 5 lakh for the year 2012 for the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award.
