In West Bengal, Asansol, at least 12 policemen were injured in a clash with locals. According to reports, the agitation erupted after the locals started to protest against the setting up of the COVID-19 quarantine centre at a hostel.
The locals reportedly blocked roads and vandalised a police vehicle. There are at least 20 people in isolation at the quarantine centre.
The situation became uncontrollable and the policemen had to resort to firing tear gas shells. All of the injured policemen were immediately taken to local hospitals. The Jamuria police station in Asansol district sent reinforcements to the spot.
Previously, a man was shot dead during a clash between rival groups of villages over setting up a quarantine centre at a local school at Parui. In a letter to the West Bengal government, the Union Home Ministry asked to take necessary measures to stop the alleged violation incidents in several parts of the state.
West Bengal has reported a total of 190 coronavirus cases among which 110 are active cases. Total 7 people have died in the state so far while 36 people have been cured.
