The actor turned politician Kamal Haasan condemned the government of Tamil Nadu, AIADMK for not taking effective steps in the Pollachi sex abuse case. He raised questions over the role of the ruling party saying, “You carry Jayalalithaa’s picture in your pocket but what have you done for the safety of women?”
Kamal Hassan criticized the state government and accused that it has muzzled the women who were abused. The police officer along with the Home Secretary was lashed out by the opposition parties for naming the sole complainant during a press conference.
Mr. Hassan asked, “Why is the government silent on the Coimbatore Superintendent of Police naming the woman, who had filed a complaint? How were the videos leaked?”
Kamal Hassan was the first to point out the massive sex abuse case last week. Earlier this week the AIADMK government dismissed one of their party workers after the opposition party DMK and Kamal Hasaan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) slammed the government for silently sitting on the case. Later he was arrested but released on bail.
Meanwhile, the AIADMK has claimed that no leader of their party was attached to the scandal and accused the opposition of damaging their image before the elections. The district police chief, R Pandiarajan had also given a clean chit to the ruling party saying, “No AIADMK functionary or their ward is involved in this.”
In Coimbatore, eight men were arrested for sexually harassing women in their twenties. The women mostly were college students who were first sent messages on social media, and later invited for dinners and long drives. The police said that the accused first gains the confidence of victims then lure them to their designated places and used to molest them. The accused allegedly filmed the women being molested and used the videos to blackmail them for money.
