On Friday, MDMK leader Vaiko and scores of his supporters were detained after BJP and MDMK volunteers clashed on the border of Tirunelveli in Kavalkinaru area in Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district, reports police.
He has also gathered at Kavalkinaru along with his supporters and gave a speech, listed out the reported betrayal of Tamil Nadu by the Central government on several issues, which also include Cauvery.
Even as the MDMK leader Vaiko was speaking, BJP and MDMK cadres clashed, thrown stones at each other, reports state police.
Police wave into the action and detained Vaiko and other MDMK workers as well.
The party workers carried placards that read, “Modi go back as you betrayed Tamils.”
Tamil Nadu police report that BJP workers and volunteers also demanded Vaiko’s arrest, adding that he was spreading lies about the Central government and trying to influence voters. It continued that about 100 MDMK workers have been detained along with Vaiko.
Vaiko and MDMK workers were refused entry into Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district by the state police and stopped at the border.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently in Kanyakumari to introduce a number of welfare projects there.
