The incident happened when PDP leader Mufti Sajid, who is also a close relative of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti went to a mosque in Bijbehara to offer prayers, said a police official.

The mosque is situated around 50-metres away from Mr. Sajid’s place, claims police.

The terrorists encountered Mr. Sajid’s PSO, identified as Farooq Ahmad, who was then standing outside the mosque, opened fire at him from a close range, said the police official, adding that Mufti Sajid is out of danger.

According to the eyewitness report to the state police, two terrorists tried to clutch the rifle from Mr. Sajid’s PSO.

The incident spot has been cordoned off and searches operation introduced to arrest the suspect, said the official.
