Vice President Venkaiah Naidu ensures passage of Reservation Bill for women in Parliament - TNBCLive

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu has appealed to all political parties to accord and ensure the passage of Women’s Reservation Bill in the Parliament and State Legislature, which will allow a reservation to women.

VP Naidu has pointed out that seat reservation for women in Municipalities and Panchayats has proved to be successful.

On Sunday, while addressing a gathering at the Women Entrepreneurship Platform Conclave and after presenting 2018 Women Transforming India Awards, which was organized by UN, NITI Aayog and WEP in India, VP Naidu said that “the contribution of Indian women to GDP, currently at 17 percent, was well below the global average of 37 percent. Only 27 percent of women in India were gainfully employed. These are the numbers that pose a challenge to the lawmakers and lawmakers of this country, and this is where NITI Aayog’s efforts in empowering women entrepreneurs through WEP is especially commendable.”

NITI Aayog’s CEO Amitabh Kant, India’s UN Resident Coordinator Yuri Afanasiev, Tennis Player Sania Mirza and other delegates were also present on the occasion.

Evaluating that a country cannot progress if half the population was not encouraged to be equal in progress, VP Naidu said that India in the past few years records a healthy growth in women entrepreneurship.

The Vice President of India continued that “Discrimination against women has to end in terms of differential wages or skewed opportunities for career advancement. The private sector can play a major role in ending discrimination by being equal opportunity employers and it is time that the ‘glass ceiling’ is shattered.”

VP Naidu said that it was high time that people should focus on equality of gender and added that “women have to be given a level playing field”. He presented 13 women with 2018 Women Transforming India Awards, who are experts in various fields from district parts of the country.
