On Tuesday, Minister of State (Home Affairs) Hansraj Ahir said that the NRC (National Register of Citizens) list will be made limited to Assam for now.

Mr. Ahil has filed a written response in the Lok Sabha amid the ongoing Winter Session of the Parliament, which started from December 11.

On December 12, Supreme Court had extended the last date of filing and claiming objections on the inclusion of names in the last of NRC from December 15 to December 31, 2018.

NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela told the Supreme Court that “Out of 40 lakh people who were left out of the final draft NRC, 14.8 lakh people have filed claims.”

It further extended the date for commencement of verification to February 15 from the earlier date of February 1.

Earlier, the government of Assam had sought an extension of the one-month deadline for filing the claims for inclusion in the NRC list from the top court.

NRC list is a register that will contain names of Indian citizens, which were prepared for the only time in 1951 and is updated for Assam only to the removal of the illegal immigrants.
