On Monday, a Delhi court issued fresh warrants against the four convicts of the Nirbhaya rape case. This was the third warrant issued by the court, which said Nirbhaya convicts will now hang on Match 3 at 6 am. The two earlier ones could not be carried out as convicts tried every possible legal option to save themselves.
Tihar jail authorities informed that three of the four convicts — Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta, Mukesh Singh, and Akshay Singh — have exhausted all legal options, and none of them has any appeals pending in any court at the moment.
The mother of Nirbhaya, who has been fighting for several years for the justice of her child, said she was “very happy” with the court’s decision. “I hope this will be the final date for hanging,” she added.
The convicts tried their best to delay the execution while the High Court said they would have only one week to explore all “legal remedies” after which the family would be free to seek a fresh death warrant from the trial court.
Nirbhaya, a 23-year-old medical student in Delhi, was tortured and gang-raped by the four convicts along with two others on the night of December 16, 2012. She died on December 29 at a hospital in Singapore. They even tortured her with iron rods brutally. Thousands of people took the street to protest the brutal attack, which led to crucial changes in the law and security system.
