Rahul Gandhi mocks at GST says, PM Modi using Congress’ “Grand Stupid thought” - TNBCLive

After 2-days repeatedly saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is asleep, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday claims that his party has managed to wake him up over the flagship GST. In a flashback to the acronym war on GST that raged last year, the Congress Chief has once dubbed the flagship one tax regime, “Gabbar Singh Tax” after the popular villain in Bollywood blockbuster Sholay– hits back with PM Moid’s version of it.

Mr. Gandhi Twitter post reads, “The Congress Party has finally jolted Narendra Ji from his deep slumber on Gabbar Singh Tax. Though still drowsy, he now wants to implement what he had earlier called the Congress Party’s, “Grand Stupid Thought.” Better late than never Narendra Ji”

Days after BJP electoral setback in all three election-bound states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, yesterday PM Modi declares a plan to simplify the one tax that with its four slabs, which has confused traders to a wider extent.

Simplifying the rules further, the Prime Minister of India said that 99 percent items will now be placed under 18 percent tax slab.

Last year, after winning in the Gujarat Assembly Elections, PM Modi had criticized Mr. Gandhi and said that a “recently emerged economist” was propagating a “Grand Stupid Thought” by recommending that the GST rate should be capped in the country at 18 percent.

PM Modi said, “Under their Grand Stupid Thoughts, they want basic necessities of the poor to be taxed at 18%,” adding that “at the same time they want cigarettes and alcohol to be cheaper. What logic is this?”

About Rahul Gandhi’s statement ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’ he said that those who have looted the country all their lives can be remembered as only dacoits.

After PM Modi’s yesterday’s announcement about 18 percent cap, ex-Finance Minister P Chidambaram was the first to hit back at PM Modi’s statement.

Mr. Chidambaram Twitter post reads, “Government says 99% of goods will be at 18 percent GST. Belated wisdom. We should have started at 18 percent at the standard rate. Having scrambled the egg needlessly when GST was introduced, Government is trying to unscramble it! Typical of NDA”

“BJP/NDA governance mantra is ‘Leap before you look’. Which is the reason for the damage caused by GST to businesses, especially MSMEs,” added the senior Congress leader.
