Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP Government has created “more than 10 crore jobs” in the last 5-years, claims Union Energy Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The startling claim was in reply to a query over criticism of the government’s track record on the creation of jobs, a central issue in the ongoing poll campaign.

Mr. Pradhan claims that the Prime Minister “has given all these facts on the floor of Parliament”.

Dharmendra Pradhan comes from Odisha, claims that the proof of job creation lies in the big flow in government schemes. He continued, “From 2009 to 2014 (under the UPA government) Odisha got 4.9 lakh homes under the center’s Indira Awas Yojana housing scheme. In (Narendra) Modi’s five years, the number is 10 lakhs. Don’t you think a number of house units, more investment in the house has not created new jobs?”

An unpublished report by the NSSP (National Sample Survey Office), which a government data agency has found that unemployment is at a 45-year high.

Mr. Pradhan said that “there is no such report. I am quoting what honorable PM has said on the floor of the parliament.”

On February 2019, in a Parliamentary speech, PM Modi didn’t quote a specific jobs figure but gave several instances of potential sources of job creation, including growth in tourism, provident fund deductions, increase in vehicle sales, and lending under government introduced MUDRA small loans scheme.

He further rejected another criticism that the government has miserably failed to offer farmers a profitable price for their crops.

Ahead of 2014 Elections, BJP had promised to double the income of poor farmers, which the party has mentioned twice in its manifesto.

“Do you think five years are enough? No, no, five years are not enough. We are seeking another mandate, to sustain that commitment,” added Mr. Pradhan.
