A day after CBI Director Alok Verma was extradited from his duty, the additional CBI Director M Nageswara Rao again took over the charges on Friday.
In October 2018, Mr. Rao had been made the interim Chief after Mr. Verma was sent on forced leave, had welcomed him back personally to the CBI headquarters on Wednesday after he conditionally restored by the top court.
M Nageswara Rao is a 1986-batch Odisha cadre IPS Officer, was again asked to take over the charges by the Department of Personnel and Training.
On October 23, Mr. Rao first took charges as the interim chief under certain dramatic circumstances at 2 am after Mr. Verma was discharged of his powers and sent away.
Special Director Rakesh Asthana was also sent on a forced leave the same day. Both had exchanged several charges of corruption, in an unparalleled public feud in the investigating agency.
On Thursday, Mr. Verma was removed for the second time from the charges after his reinstatement, by a high-power selection committee led by PM Modi.
In a two-one decision, which is backed by the Supreme Court judge Justice AK Sikri, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge was the dissenting member.
