The state police of Jammu and Kashmir were directed by the Governor Satya Pal Malik to complete investigation in the alleged rape of a three-year-old girl in Bandipora district on a fast track basis.
A special investigation team (SIT) has been set up by the state police to investigate the rape case. Meanwhile, one person accused in the case has been arrested. An official spokesperson said that the governor has also ordered the Divisional Commissioner and the Inspector General of Police of Kashmir to personally supervise the investigation.
A separate inquiry has been ordered to check the veracity of the age of the accused and ascertain the authenticity of the age certificate, the spokesman added. However, the preliminary medical examination showed that the accused man is not a juvenile, police said on Monday.
“On learning about the unfortunate incident, the governor immediately spoke to S P Pani, IGP Kashmir, and took a detailed review of the ongoing investigations into the case,” the spokesman said.
The governor requested the people not to pay attention to rumors and declared the rumor mongers will be strictly punished as per the law. Governor Malik directed the IGP to work swiftly in the case and to ensure that the culprit gets exemplary punishment.
The governor spoke to religious leaders of different communities asking them to deplore the incident. Earlier the day Jammu and Kashmir saw a huge clash where over 40 security personnel, including an officer, and seven civilians were injured during protest against the rape of the girl.
