On Tuesday, self-styled godman Asaram has withdrawn a petition for bail and suspension of sentence punished to him, accused of raping a girl in 2013 at his ashram.
The application was withdrawn after a division bench consisting of Justices Vineet Kumar Mathur, and Sandeep Mehta reported the defence counsel to proceed with arguments or “the court would pass an order accordingly.”
Prosecution Counsel P C Solanki said, “Seeing the stand of the court, his counsel decided to withdraw the application with a prayer of ‘not press’ and the court dismissed the petition.”
Mr. Solanki continued, “We have withdrawn the application for suspension of sentence and will proceed with the arguments on an appeal against the sentence.”
The appeal will be heard by the court after a month.
In February, convict Asaram had sought for interim bail to attend to his ailing wife Laxmi Devi. However, the court has rejected the petition.
The Jodhpur Court had found Asaram and two of his associates as guilty in a rape case in 2013. Currently, Asaram is serving a life term sentence in Jodhpur Central Jail.
