On Friday, Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi has postponed his tour timings for Amethi due to the ongoing Rafale deal discussion in the Parliament.
Today, Mr. Gandhi was scheduled to address a programme in Amethi at 4:30 pm, will leave for Amethi after the session in the Parliament and reach Fursatganj in the evening.
The political situation in Amethi, the Lok Sabha constituency of the Congress Chief, is likely to be charged today as Mr. Gandhi and Union Minister Smriti Irani are scheduled to visit the town at the same time.
During his visit to Amethi, Mr. Gandhi will meet the people there, attend public and party events, hold “corner meetings” and also participate in a function of the newly-appointed Congress spokesman. Today, before reaching to Amethi, Mr. Gandhi will be traveling to Pardeshpur, Salon Nagar, Paraiya Naseerabad, and Gauriganj Namaskar.
On January 5, after spending time in Amethi, Mr. Gandhi will travel to Jagdishpur, Musafirkhana Tehsil, and Tiloyi, where the Congress Chief will meet the family members of a senior party leader Shiv Pratap Singh, who last week died due to prolonged illness before reaching Lucknow to catch a flight back to the national capital, Delhi.
It will be Rahul Gandhi’s first visit to the constituency after Congress victory in the recent Assembly Elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh.
On the other hand, Ms. Irani will attend a programme that was organized by an NGO, Raghav Sewa Sansthan, during which financial assistance and blankets will be extended those in necessity. The Union Minister will further lay the foundation stone in Amethi for a school.
The two leaders have been fighting hard on the development of Amethi, with Ms. Irani maintaining that the Amethi Constituency had suffered despite Gandhi family represents it in the Lok Sabha over decades.
Rahul Gandhi, a MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi had defeated BJP candidate Smriti Irani from this Lok Sabha seats in 2014 Lok Sabha Elections. Smriti Irani is likely to contest from the Amethi seat once again in the forthcoming 2019 General Elections for which she has made frequent trips to gather the support and influence voters as well.
However, Mr. Gandhi and Ms. Irani have visited Amethi for an ample number of time in the last 5-years and this is the first time that they will be in the region together at the same time.
