On Wednesday, Congress National Chief Sonia Gandhi and Ambika Soni went to Tihar Jail in Delhi to meet with their party leaders from Karnataka, DK Shivakumar is currently in jail over allegations of a money-laundering scam. DK Shivakumar is the brother of DK Suresh, who was also present during the meeting of party leaders.
The Delhi High Court will offer its verdict today on his bail petition. Mr. Shivakumar was detained by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a reported money-laundering scam in September. The investigation team has alleged that the 57-year-old DK Shivakumar hadn’t been paying taxes and made transactions worth crores.
DK Suresh told sources that Sonia Gandhi has assured his brother that Congress is with him and will stand always in his support. She further stated that it is a case of “political vendetta” and other party leaders are also being aimed by the BJP-led Central Government.
Quoting the Congress National Chief, Mr. Suresh has said that “we have to fight them and come out of this.”
DK Shivakumar’s daughter Aishwarya is 23-year-old, who was also interrogated by the ED days after he was detained. The investigation team said that they wanted to ask his daughter how her net worth grew from Rs. 1 crore in 2013 to Rs. 100 crore in 2018, and whether the financial transactions between them involved unaccounted money.
DK Shivakumar made national headlines in 2017, after he accepted to accommodate 44 Congress legislators from Gujarat at a resort to avert them from being poached by the opposition ahead of crucial polls.
Income Tax officials soon came knocking at his doors. A number of properties linked to the Congress leader were also raided in August 2017.
On Monday, former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy also met him at the Tihar Jail, said that he was a target of political revenge.
After meeting his former colleague, CM Kumaraswamy told sources that “it was a cordial meeting. He is very confident that he can face everything. He has that capacity. Whoever wants to do vengeance politics, they will be taught. This is a personal visit. We worked together. I came here to give confidence to him. He is mentally very strong. He will fight it with boldness. He has given all the details and he co-operated with them very well. Anyone can guess why this is all going on.”
DK Shivakumar was the main troubleshooter of the coalition government.
