On Monday, the IT (Income Tax) Department has seized a house of a Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani in Delhi, accused of having links with 3.62-crore tax evasion case.
Mr. Geeliani’s property is located in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area has been seized after he repeatedly ‘failed’ to pay income tax for financial years 1996-97 to 2001-02, reports sources.
The IT department has undertaken the action under IPC Section 222 of I-T Act (assessee deemed in default of tax payment), and it also has “prohibited and restrained” the Hurriyat Conference leader from transferring his property.
The TRO is an enforcement action, which has taken the arm of the Tax Department and dealing with the cases of willful defaulters. The authority is licensed to attach an asset and subsequently auction it to realize the due taxes.
In March 2019, the ED has levied a fine of Rs. 14.40 lakh on Mr. Geelani in a 17-year-old case for illegal possession of foreign currency.
