On Wednesday, the Supreme Court has made it clear that it will not extend the deadline of July 13 for finalization of NRC (National Register of Citizens) in Assam.

A justice-bench comprising of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice RF Nariman also delivered a “free hand” to Prateek Hajela, who is a coordinator of Assam NRC dealing with claims and aims of persons against wrong inclusion of citizens in the list.

The direction was given after Mr. Hajela has informed the justice-bench that many people had aimed to the inclusion of certain individuals in the NRC draft are not appearing before the panel, which is dealing with the issues.

Assam’s NRC list was published on July 30, 2018, in which the names of around 2.89 crores out of 3.29 crore people were drafted. However, the names of 4070707 people didn’t figure in the NRC list and of these 3759630 names have already been rejected and the remaining 248077 are on hold.
