Delhi Police will soon file a charge sheet in the rebellion case against former JNU Students’ Union President Kanhaiya Kumar and other activists, including Anirban Bhattacharya, and Umar Khalid, said Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik on Wednesday.
In 2016, all three of them were detained in a sedition case for accused of organizing an event in JNU Campus against the hanging of Parliament-attack mastermind Afzal Guru. The arrest of all three of them and especially of Mr. Kumar had triggered a huge controversy with the opposition slamming the police for “working at the behest of the ruling BJP.”
Amulya Patnaik said that “the case is in the stage of finalization. The investigation was complex as the team also had to visit other states to take statements. The charge sheet will be filed soon.”
The controversial event organized at JNU campus had sparked outrage after the allegations were made that several anti-national slogans were also raised.
The arrest of Mr. Kumar catapulted him to national fame, which resulted in protest across the country.
