A city minister of Delhi claimed that nearly 900 people in the city have been quarantined after a doctor of a community tested positive for the coronavirus. All the 900 people came in contact with him so they have been isolated. Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain told reporters, they have been isolated for 14 days. The total number of cases in Delhi has now come to 36. On Wednesday, the doctor’s wife and their teenage daughter were also tested positive for the virus.
According to Mr Jain, they may have contracted the virus from an infected woman who had visited the clinic after returning from Saudi Arabia. On March 12, the woman had visited the clinic. Five more persons have tested positive for the virus from direct contact with her. About 74 persons in her neighbourhood are under watch.
The doctor used to check the patients at a mohalla clinic in Maujpur in northeast Delhi. The clinic was set up by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi mainly for the economically weaker. Maujpur is a densely populated area and any spread of the virus in the area can be extremely dangerous.
India reported 90 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday taking the total number of cases to 606 with 13 deaths. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a 21 days lockdown all over the country and ordered that no one must leave their homes in this period.
