Delhi Congress Chief Ajay Maken has resigned months before the election due this year. Sources report that Rahul Gandhi has accepted his resignation. Four years ago he took the responsibility as Delhi Congress President. It was the time when Congress was decimated in state polls after three times in power.

According to the sources, there may be a chance that Ajay Maken,54, will be given a new central role or even he may compete for the Lok Sabha election. He has given health reason for resigning.

Before announcing his resignation last night Mr. Maken met Rahul Gandhi. He tweeted in Hindi saying that he has received immense love and support from Rahul Gandhi, workers and media in past four years as Delhi Congress resident and he is grateful for that.

Before three months of the incident, Congress had denied the report of Mr. Maken’s resignation saying that he had “temporarily stepped down” because of health problem.

Mr. Maken has replaced Arvinder Singh Lovely as Delhi Congress Chief Mr. Maken was second-time parliament and former union minister.

In May 2017, he had resigned once before when the party did not well perform in civic polls but on the request of Rahul Gandhi, then vice president, he took it back and continued.

When there was a possibility of an understanding between the Congress and Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Mr. Maken was to seen to have differences with the central leadership.

He was strongly opposed to a tie-up with AAP for the national election. It is supposed that Congress is in a dilemma at a time and is ready to rally all opposition parties against BJP.
