On Tuesday, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman leads a MiG-21 Bison formation at the Air Force Day Flypast. A few days ago, he was awarded ‘Vir Chakra’ for downing a Pakistani fighter jet.
Five Gallantry awardees have also lead an Avenger formation comprising of two Su-30MKI aircraft and three Mirage 2000s.
The loudest cheer came from Mr. Varthaman when it was declared that the Wing Commander was leading the MiG-21 Bison formation.
On February 27, Mr. Varthaman has downed a Pakistani fighter jet in a dogfight, ahead of his own MiG-21 Bison was knocked down by a missile. After which, the Wing Commander has crash-landed in PoK (Pakistani occupied Kashmir) where he was detained. However, the Government of Pakistan has to release him after retaining him in its custody for around 60-hours.
The aerial skirmish had taken place a day after the Indian Air Force (IAF) has targeted terror camps in Pakistan’s Balakot.
