Television actor-cum-singer Karan Oberoi was detained over charges of rape and blackmail. He has been sent to 14-days judicial custody in Mumbai by a Magistrate Court.

On May 6, Mr. Oberoi was arrested after the woman, who is by profession an astrologer has registered a complaint with the Police Station, alleged him of blackmail and rape on the pretext of marriage.

He was retained to police custody till May 8 and was produced before the court today.

Mr. Oberoi’s lawyer Dinesh Tiwari informs that he would apply for bail on behalf of his client at a Sessions Court, on Friday.

According to the FIR lodged by the victim woman, the actor has raped her on the promise of marriage, has filmed that act and tried to extort money from her under the threat of making the footage public.

34-year-old woman reports that she had met the convict through a dating app in 2016. She further alleged that after a year, Mr. Oberoi has offered her spiked coconut water and then assaulted her sexually.  

He had been a model, actor, and singer since 25 years and presently acting in several TV serials including Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, Swabhimaan, and Saaya. Karan Oberoi was also a vocalists of A Band of Boys.

Defending Mr. Oberoi, actress Pooja Bedi claims the laws that exist to protest the rape victim’s voice should be used in a responsible manner by women. She told source, “We need to think about how to protect the right of a man as well.”

A former member of A Band of Boys, Sudhanshu Pandey also stood up for him, saying that he doesn’t believe in the charges against Mr. Oberoi as he was “the most chivalrous” in the five-member team.
