On Sunday, flight services at the second airport in Odisha, Jharsuguda Veer Surendra Sai Airport started under UDAN scheme.

Budget airline SpiceJet is operating its direct flights daily to Hyderabad, Delhi, and Kolkata from VSS Airport.

The flights were also a part of the Centre’s Regional Connectivity Scheme under UDAN.

The VSS Airport with a handling capacity of 300 passengers was introduced on September 22, 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The VSS Airport Director Sudesh Kumar Chouhan said that “the first flight of Spicejet landed from Hyderabad. 95 percent of seats booked from Jharsuguda and passengers are very happy.”

Dubai-based software company manager Priyadarshi Panigrahi said that “it is a historical moment for us as we are frequent fliers. We had to spend lots of time to reach Sambalpur. Now, we can reach within a few hours from Dubai by connecting flights.”

To make it memorable, a water cannon salute was offered to the SpiceJet flights and an inaugural event at a small scale was arranged inside the lounge at the VSS Airport.

According to sources, the second airport in Odisha was constructed at 10275.5 acres of land with an estimated cost of Rs. 210 crores.
